Andy started to play the blues on the guitar when he was about 13. He soon figured out that he could also do it on the violin too. Shortly afterwards, he heard an Ace of Clubs recording of Stephane Grappelli and Django Reinhardt – and has loved the sound of their music ever since. He started playing violin in cafes in Portsmouth around the age of 14 – moved to London in 1980 and has been performing in and around London since then. As a member of The Kimbara Brothers he toured hot club music all over the UK for some years as well as performing with John Etheridge, Tina May, Le Jazz, Fapy Lafertin, Angelo Debarre and many more. In the '90s, he formed & recorded with 'The Morellos' - still working with them from time to time. Andy carried on with the guitar too – still playing the blues whilst all his friends were in to punk and the many trends that have followed. He finally gave up the guitar a couple of years ago when all of his guitars were stolen: a sign, if one were needed, to concentrate on the violin. He was also part of the original Szapora line-up – happily standing aside when he moved to Amsterdam for a few years. Over the past few years, Andy has worked with the celebrated gypsy guitar master, Lollo Meier, touring in the UK and Europe. More recently still, he has worked with Lollo in Italy with Lollo and numerous Italian players including Jacopo Martini and Attilio Troiano (winner of 2010 Italian Jazz Newcomer award). The influences of Artie Shaw and Stephane Grappelli can be heard in Andy's playing – their unparalleled sense of swing, technical excellence and stylish arrangements are second to none. Andy has sought to combine these with the soulful guitar sounds of Peter Green and BB King in playing. Recorded with: The Kimbara Brothers, Jade Warrior, The Vibrators, Le Quecumbar triple album (with Paulus Schaefer and Ritary Gaguenetti), The Morellos, numerous hot club CDs. Festivals: Upton upon Severn (for over 10 years), Edinburgh, Soho, Brighton, Birmingham, Ealing, Grimsby, St. Albans, Hungerford, Teignmouth, Sheffield, City of London, Namur, Turin, Florence, Metaponto. |
